If you are interested in becoming a member you must be sponsored by a current active member of the club. The Rotary Club of Nantucket holds its weekly meetings every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at Faregrounds Restaurant located at 27 Fairgrounds Road. A minimum of three (3) consecutive luncheon meetings must be attended. Your sponsor is required to pay for your first meeting and you are responsible for subsequent meetings. After three meetings and information about what it means to be a Rotarian and what is required when you make the commitment to become a member is provided by your sponsor. You and your sponsor may notify Mike Burns, chair of the Membership Committee, to schedule a meeting that will enable you to learn more about Rotary and address any questions you may have. Mr. Burns will provide your application to the Bob Gardner, club secretary, who will present your application to the Executive Committee for vote.

Individual Rotary clubs belong to Rotary International. Individual members, or Rotarians, belong to a club. The club is where most of Rotarians' meaningful service work is carried out. Clubs can be engaged not only in their communities, but also internationally. What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it.

As a new member, you'll get a chance to become more involved in our community and provide aid to other parts of the world through the opportunities that the Rotary Club of Nantucket and Rotary International offer.

Longtime Rotarians agree that involvement is the key to getting the most out of membership. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, provide community service, volunteer at club events and fundraisers, orjoin a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and better understand the work of Rotary.

What Rotarians get out of Rotary depends largely on what they put into it. Many membership requirements are designed to help club members more fully participate in and enjoy their Rotary experience.

Attendance

Attending weekly club meetings allows members to enjoy fellowship, enrich their professional and personal knowledge, and meet other business leaders in their community.

If members miss a meeting of their own club, they’re encouraged to expand their Rotary horizons by attending a meeting of any other Rotary club in the world. Visit www.rotary.org to find club locations. The Rotary Club of Nantucket provides monthly breakfast and thirsty Thursday make up meetings.

Service

By participating in local and international service projects, club members can volunteer their time and talents where they’re most needed.

The four Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

1. Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the club’s effective functioning.
2. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.
3. Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.
4. International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace.

Finding and keeping members

To keep clubs strong, every Rotarian must share the responsibility of bringing new people into Rotary. Even new members can bring guests to club meetings or invite them to participate in a service project.

Keeping members involved in Rotary is another responsibility. Fostering strong fellowship and encouraging early participation in service projects are two of the best ways to sustain a club’s membership.

Dues

Club members pay annual dues to their clubs, currently $125 for Nantucket. Dues include the subscription to the Rotarian magazine.

Leadership

Club members are encouraged to volunteer for leadership roles at the club level and beyond.
